'Life on
Board' When you make your
holiday reservation you may not realize at the time, but you are putting your
life in the hands of your captain and crew. Like a pilot of a plane or an open
heart surgeon a profession on the sea is a skillful and difficult one. All the
captains have had to attend an intensive course and pass written and oral
examinations of varying standards according to the gulet size they wish to
sail. This is a very expensive set of exams and the pass rate is low due to the
high standards required.
Once on
board you will see the captain, first mate (cook) and assistant who take care
of everything. From the boat sailing, route-planning, cooking and cleaning
their work is never done. You have to remember while cruising they have a
routine of jobs to do which do not have direct effect on the passengers ie..
checking oil and water, regular engine checks and much more, so please do
remember this.
The crew are always
first to rise in the morning and the cooks first job is to start to make the
tea. This is very unusual to the British who make a cup of tea in two minutes,
just by placing a tea bag into a cup of boiling water. In all parts of Turkey
tea is made in a very unique way. Firstly cold water is boiled in a metal tea
pot over a naked flame. In a second slightly smaller pot tea leaves are placed
into and this is then placed on the top of the larger pot. The water is left to
boil for 20 mins. which warms the tea leaves. A small amount of the boiling
water is then poured over the tea leaves and left over the flame for another 10
mins. After this simmering process the tea is served by pouring a small amount
of the strong tea into a cup and topping the rest up with the boiling water
from the pot below. As you will see there is great skill in making true Turkish
tea and it is impossible to put the kettle on for a quick cup of tea or
coffee!!.
All meals are prepared
on the gulet so the cook will start with breakfast preparation while the
captain checks the program and route of the day. After breakfast the real fun
begins as you start sailing and the captain uses his knowledge of the coastline
to find hidden secrets and bays for you to stop and relax in. During the
morning there are plenty of maintenance jobs to be done on the gulet as well as
checking if the passengers are not getting too much sun!!.
Lunch is then carefully prepared and eaten by the
hungry passengers and crew. The afternoon is a time for the crew to continue
with their deck duties, maybe the passengers want to use the watersport
equipment, have a cool refreshing drink or the crew could have to do some food
ordering. After afternoon tea is served with biscuits it is then time to
prepare for the evening meal which can be the highlight of your day, where you
can sit down, eat great food and talk over the days events.
